Network devices
I've been very frustrated with internet at home lately. I don't know why the loading icon keeps spinning when I open pages on my phone. Sometimes, even using 4G in my bedroom is smoother than using Wi-Fi. I once thought it was a problem with the telecom provider, but later I found out it was mainly because my primary router's performance was limited after installing "certain" features, resulting in only a third of the bandwidth being available. The main reason for the slow Wi-Fi is that my Apple router hasn't been updated for many years, and its wall penetration isn't very good after enabling 5G. After much consideration, I decided to replace all the equipment. Below is a comparison of the old and new devices:
Old equipment | New device | |
Level 1 route | Netgear wr3800(Lede) | J1900 Soft router(Lede) |
Secondary routing | AirPort Time Capsule + AirPort Extrem x2 | Linksys Velop AC6600 V1 x3 |
Photo backup | Sync + iMac + LaCie | WD Redx2 + Qnap 251+ |
The previous device wasn't very reliable when it came to photo backups, but we've managed to get by for so many years, just making do. It didn't feel necessary to buy a NAS just for storing photos, since a Sync + iMac could handle it. But in recent years, there have been too many workarounds, and all the tinkering wasn't really worth it, ultimately just a waste of time. So this time, I've decided to replace everything with something a bit more reliable all at once.
Brick-and-mortar stores' spring?
Following the above equipment purchase, I went to the computer market. Actually, I was just going for a walk, because I initially thought that the prices in physical stores would definitely be more expensive than on Taobao. But after arriving at the computer market, I found that a 2TB Western Digital Red drive was only 470, while online it costs at least 560. Is this the charm of "new retail," or am I just unlucky and got a refurbished hard drive? I'll need to get my hands on it and test it to verify it in the end.
Under the Bodhi tree
The original intention of creating "Under the Bodhi Tree" was to set a rule for myself: try not to write about work or product design. Just record fragments of my life. Although there are also interesting things happening at work, like this strange BUG, we should still invest some of our time in life besides work. Only a person who truly loves life can love work and the products they create even more.
